Brain
Fitness
You can
help keep your mind sharp by exercising your
brain. Just like the body, your brain needs
particular types of activity to help keep it
healthy. Consider trying one or more of
these activities to help challenge your
mind:
-
Take up chess, learn a new card game, or
work a crossword puzzle.
-
Volunteer at a local school or charity
-
Spend time with friends and family
whenever possible.
-
Learn a new language
-
Enroll in a ballroom dance class
-
Join a club that you find interesting
-
Try out a new hobby that will challenge
you, such as photography or knitting
-
Enroll in a computer course at the
library or a local school
-
Get lots of rest
-
Exercise and eat well
-
Don’t drink a lot of alcohol
-
Get help if you feel depressed for weeks
at a time.
What
should I do if I’m worried about my memory?
See your
doctor. If your doctor thinks it’s serious,
you may need to have a complete checkup,
including blood and urine tests. You also
may need to take tests that check your
memory, problem-solving, counting and
language skills. In addition, you may need
a CAT scan of the brain, which can show
normal and problem areas. Once the doctor
finds out what is causing your memory
problems, ask about what is the best
treatment for you.
